Pizza Hut near Millwoods Centre

20 Feb

As I walked towards the UPS store near Millwoods area to drop of my wife’s broken blackberry pearl to be sent back to Fido I felt the urge of hunger.  So I dropped by a nearby restaurant before I continued on with my plans for today.

As I walked into the restaurant I was greeted by a server by the name of Micheal.  He asked me to sit at a table which gives me a clear view of the kitchen.

So I put my bag down including the papers down at the side of me while I looked through the menu.

Micheal asked if I was familiar with the menu & I replied to him by saying yes.

At the time, I was a bit hungry but not starving but nevertheless I ordered the Garlic Tomato Bruschetta & Creamy Chicken Alfredo to finish it off with Ice Tea to push down the food.

I noticed that both these items where served at almost the same time, which I found strange as it was an appetizer and the other meal was an entree.  Shouldn’t have it been served in its proper order?

While I was waiting for the food, I found that their service level was top notched.  Their kitchen has a compliment of different cultures.  Their food handling ethics is much to be appreciated.  Yes they aren’t wearing gloves but still they weren’t touching the food being handled which was extremely comforting.

The one cutting the pizzas after being cooked was very fast & efficient.

Well, I must say the Creamy Chicken Alfredo was extremely tasty however the Garlic Tomato Bruschetta was a bit bland for my taste.

The entire meal was $25+ and it was delightful to eat here always.

I will definitely go their again.

The China Marble Review

15 Feb

First of all, Happy Valentines Day everyone & Happy Chinese New Year.   Today as soon as I got home from work, me, the missus & a good friend went to our favorite restaurant.  The name of the restaurant  is called China Marble.

While we were walking their were really hoping for them to be open as today was a New Year for the Chinese.  Luckily they were and it wasn’t busy at all.

When you step into the restaurant, the setting is almost like a simple canteen with chairs & tables. There are no special designs on the wall, except for a few picture frames & a broken wall clock that always points to 8:00 o’clock.

They have a washroom available to their customers.

The server and the cook were having a nice long chat inside the kitchen and they didn’t notice us come in.   We looked around for a suitable table to sit at & sat down, we had to shout out “Ni-Hao!!!” to grab their attention and the lady quickly came to us with a smile.

She knew us as we were their often (before http://www.mylocalreview.com was created).  The sever gave us three menus and we turn the pages. All the tables had different types of food menus in them, one of them was completely in Chinese so we were able to choose from that batch.  But the other two menus that are visible under the glass top tables where in English.  The separate menu given to us has a number of pages with a long list of menu items that seems to be good to read, however we weren’t sure if they tasted good or not.

So we decided to play it safe today being that it was a special occasion.  The following items where what we ordered for this small event.

  • 3 orders of Green Onion Cake
  • China Marble Chicken
  • Ginger Beef
  • 2 orders of Salted Fish & Chicken Fried Rice (my favorite)
  • 2 orders of Diet Coke
  • Tea
  • Shrimps & Scallops in a Birds Nest

As we placed our orders we patiently waited for the food to be prepared.  Please keep in mind that when  you place an order with them, their usual deliver time averages to about 30 minutes.  However if you order something small, their deliver time is usually 15 – 20 mins long.  If you order something like the Birds Nest usually would take a long time for them to prepare this dish.

Tonight, it took them 30 minutes to push out all of these orders but it was worth the wait.  The food was very tasty.  However we weren’t able to finish the food as the servings provided were enormous.

Things to take note of if you plan to eat with them:

  • They have home delivery
  • If you call and place your order & pick up that order you will get 10% off however the owner stated that you should have an order total of $45.00 or more.
  • If you call & pickup, you have to pay in CASH.
  • Order Time is usually 20-30 minutes.

The Famous Wok Experience

08 Feb

I really wasn’t expecting to have this place reviewed but me and my wife were there  on Monday 8th February 2010.   But after what I saw, I figured it was worth a post.

At first, I ordered bubble tea, one of my favorite drinks.    During the time it took for the cashier to make this drink for me,  I started looking at the way they would serve their customers.

There were two servers looking through the dishes that they have on display up front & picking a few things to throw into a garbage bin located next to their station.  At first I thought it was just a small thing, however they did that for the other plates of food there, and would throw it into a garbage bin next to them.

After a few minutes they started serving the same food to customers that came by.

I didn’t ask them anything but you can only wonder why they are doing that.

To top it all off the Bubble Tea I drank tasted like water with sugar & food coloring.

I wasn’t happy with their services at all.

Boston Pizza at South Common

06 Feb

So another day at Edmonton Alberta & so we decided to take another round at reviewing a restaurant nearby and so we decided to have dinner at Boston Pizza. When we first walked into the restaurant we were met by several patrons waiting to be seated.  Wow, it was packed that night.  Possibly because it was Friday today which is payday for most people.

I quietly went to the information desk and asked if there was space for us but she said that we had to wait, as they are still cleaning the tables from customers who had already left.   She asked for our names and then asked us to have a seat at the waiting area.

We have been waiting a good ten minutes and a number of customers started storming into the entrance also hoping to get a seat.

The place was surrounded with a lot of hearts being that it is Valentines soon.

The wife and I were debating on what to order this time around…. (We came here before but this was before we created this website for your information pleasure.)

At the moment they were offering Heart Shaped Pizza till February 14th 2010.

We still had to wait another 5 to 8 minutes before our server came over, which was enough time for us to decide on what we wanted to get that night.   One of the regular staff named Nicole came up to us and she was very professional with her approach and asked us what we would like to order.

We initially though of getting a stake but we decided to go for pizza instead this time.

We got a large pizza with two flavors.  One was spicy perogies and the other one was their BP Meateor.

We also decided to go for our usual calamari.

Now the taste was something to consider.  The calamari was great as usual but our pizza could do with a bit of softening.   The bread crust was so hard that I could have broken my teeth. This something very common to pizzas after they cool down.

Nicole gave us a few refills before she disappeared and was replaced by our supposed regular server named Nicole who assisted us in finishing off the night.

Our bill came  up to $50+ which wasn’t bad considering the type of dining experience you usually get from Boston Pizza.

Dumpling Kabob Noodle House

04 Feb

We were greeted by an Asian person who asked us what we would like to eat today.  Our orders where just one order of Bubble Tea & Wor Wonton Soup.  We really didn’t feel like eatting too much as we just eat, but we wanted to try out the place.

The area is hidden from site.  You really have to walk around every corner just go to this store.  If you see a Winners Retail Store then you are surely close.

When our Wor Wonton was served the soup had some flavoring but it’s what you’d expect of a Chinese restaurant.

The area is very small and consists of 5 tables and a side bar section facing the window just in case they would get busy.

Already you will notice that the people who run this little restaurant are a family.  The cook is currently with child.  The father is in charge of the front area.  And the eldest of the kids was sitting on one of the available tables busying making a Chinese Dragon with Playdo.

Looking around  you will notice a small bed inside one of their rooms so that the child can rest or the parents during a not so busy period of the day.

I also noticed that one of the chair was wobbly.   I asked the guy if I could get another chair & promises to fix it. tomorrow.

The food here is great especially if you are just looking for a light snack to eat during your travels,  I haven’t had a chance to eat any other food on their menu, perhaps next time.

At an average a person will pay $10 – $15 dollars a meal there with a drink.   One reason why me and my wife will be visiting their again some day.

Kyoto Sushi

02 Feb

My first impression of the place was that I was expecting it not to be busy as it was situated at a junction that I don’t seem to see much traffic going by.

I was wrong, when we entered that place we were almost not able to sit on anything as the place was pretty busy. The male server that approached asked us to sit at the middle right hand corner of the restaurant.

When I looked at the menu, I first thought it was very dull as there weren’t any pictures to show their customer what these items look like.   If this is your first time at a Japanese Restaurant you may want to do a bit of research before eating here.

But if you know what type of food you’d like, the menu would be sufficient for you. As you read through the few available pages on this menu you are shown an assortment of different Japanese Cuisines.   One items that you may want to try here are the Bento Boxes are they are a selection of meat, tempura, rice & a few choices of sushi.

Taking a look around you will notice that the furnitures & lights that you see would give you a very light authentic feel of a Japanese experience.

Today, we asked the waiter to give us BentoBox A & BentoBox B.  One had chicken teriyaki as its main course & the other had beef teriyaki as its main course.  But one of the main reasons why we decided to eat Japanese food today was because of the Sushi so we ordered an assortment of Sushi.

The lady server gave us our Miso Soup first which I thought had a lot of flavoring in it but since I have my wife with me for this review she said that it seemed to be a bit too sour for her taste.

The BentoBox were pretty cool to eat as they have a selection of food in that box that would allow you to explore your taste buds of the available food they had on the menu.   The tempura was great but I would much rather have a bit more than the portion they gave was a little too small for me.

The chicken teriyaki I had was really tasty along with the dumplings that were in one corner of the box.  However, I really enjoyed the assortment of Sushi I ordered…

Our review rating : 3.7 / 5.0

Would we go there again? Well the tea was good, the Sushi was good… Possibly but only when my next craving for Sushi come along which won’t be a while.

McDonald’s Restuarant At Strathcona Edmonton

30 Jan
It is that Orange Pekoe Tea that keeps me from going back to this store over and over again.  It is ashame it isn’t part of their free refill program, or else I’ll be drink one or two more than I usually should.
This place is a very quite and nice McDonald’s Franchise that gives you comfort as one may take their break in peace.  Or may have an engaging conversation with their friends, relatives or coworker.
This place simply based on observation has become a meeting place to many of it’s neighboring stores.   I would often witness a job interview taking place here but not for the store but from another company that chose to conduct it here.
This is also a place where high school kids would take their breaks or stay together after a long day at school.
The team consists of really friendly people all from different cultures & different part of the world and are ready to serve you with whatever you wish to order.  If you are a regular their like me, I would normally be asked if I would like the same order as usual or often they would be concerned if I take just a little too much sugar on my drink.
With this team you sometimes have to be patient as they often get overwhelmed with the number of customers that comes to their front door.  One would normally be standing near the takeout counter of their drive through, another would take the post of a cashier regardless of their position in the store & entertain incoming customers from within the store.   There would often be two of them working side by side creating everyone’s order & another taking care of everyone’s drinks.
About 70% of the times I would be there I would normally get my order in under 5 minutes, but the other times I would often wait for my order anywhere from 6 minutes to 15 minutes depending on the number of customers around me.  So if you are in my shoes, I would suggest a lot of patience as they are trying.
The only downside to this entire operation is that they often operate with their bare hands.  Server your food with their bare hands.  I would much appreciate that they use gloves as they are handling your food & mine.   This isn’t helping too as you can see the entire kitchen from where you would stand to place your order.
I would hate to think that one would build your burger then handle the money that you paid them to make your burger & then followed up by throwing the garbage.   I’m sure they don’t notice this but it really isn’t sanitary…
It’s a good thing that I normally just purchase tea from there, something that requires minimal hand to food interference.
Would I go their again?  Well yes…. I honestly don’t have any better choice around the area I work.   It is the nearest to work & often if you are hungry you know the taste you are looking for is just around the corner.

Our First Visit at Red Lobster

29 Jan

As of January 28th 2010, I have being hearing a lot of good things about this restaurant so during our 2nd Wedding Anniversary we decided to spend our special moment there. We had no way to get their at 7pm in the evening so we called for a cab.

When we arrived there we first noticed that the RED LOBSTER sign in the back was only reading RED LOB.  The sign that shows their customer the way to the restaurant has broken lights & they possibly never considered it a priority for it to be fixed.  However as the driver was driving towards the front their frontal sign was lighting ok.  The sign I believe is very important and should work during the day & the night to show everyone that their store is indeed focused on class.

Regardless we planed to move forward with the idea of eating there.  At first, I worry that this restaurant needed for us to call them in advance and I never did that.  When we entered the area we were greeted by two young ladies and asked us for how many people today?   We replied two, they looked at their seating plan and quickly pointed us to our seats.  The lady that escorted us to our seat never bothered to ask us to wait for our server and just left.

At this point we didn’t seem to mind as we were just thinking of the wonderful food that we will be served.

A few minutes later we were greeted by a male server by the name of Troy & politely introduced himself to us & offered us their specials & the signature dish for tonight.   We finally agreed on two orders of ice tea, two orders of Crispy Calamari and Vegetables, one order of their Ultimate Feast the signature dish of tonight which basically consist of Rice & baked Salmon.

My first impression was that the restaurant was very commercialized.  The tables where designed so that the designated area can sit a big number of patrons to the business.  However I feel that it has been compress too much that the tables where made a little too small for anybody to sit at comfortably.  Our sever made us feel really welcome to the place therefore we didn’t again seem to mind this.

Our first set of food that came out of the kitchen where our two order of clam chowder soup.  I’d say, the soup was tasty but leaning towards bland for me.  My wife didn’t seem to mind as she was very hungry at this time.

It was then followed by two orders of our Crispy Calamari & Vegetables which seemed like an enormous order as they mixed the two orders and just placed it onto one big plate.   This was one of our usual favorites.  As we both debated whether it was processed food or made from scratch.  However, it was very tasty regardless, unfortunately we weren’t able to finish it as the two orders where pretty big.

Throughout the course we were continuously being refilled with our favorite drink, Ice Tea.

As the main course arrived we looked at how big the serving were as we attempt to consume the entire lot.  I was busy consuming food while my wife busily attended to passing half of her food over to my plate.

I did enjoy my baked salmon on rice but I was simply too full to continue on to the desert part of the course.   My wife was pretty busy enjoying her crabs, lobster & shrimps.  I too enjoyed the taste of her dish.

At the end, when we got to our bill we paid close to $120.00+ including the servers tips.

Our Review Ratings : 3.8 / 5.0

Was it worth it?  Well I think we will go their again but not in the near future, we figured that it was a little too expensive for our taste.
